The total number of people purpoted to have been destroyed in the Nagasaki/Hiroshima nuclear bombing in Japan have been put at around seventy thousand. A generation eliminated from the face of the earth in a matter of seconds. What a significant loss of lives!Let their souls rest in peace.
The effects of the nuclear bombing are still witnessed although such events took place almost fifty years ago, children born blind, crippled and deaf.
Such have been forms of aggression in the quest of power. It is not that the USA has to be blamed for such a bombing, for there are claims this was an act of a retaliation stemming from the Pearl Harbour bombing in the Pacific Ocean. Although the United States can be blamed for such an act, one should also take into consideration that the nuclear bombing is not probably the last.
The Nuclear Age began in July 1945 when the US tested their first nuclear bomb near Alamogordo, New Mexico. A few years later, in 1953, President Eisenhower launched his "Atoms for Peace" Programme at the United Nations amid a wave of unbridled atomic optimism.

During and after the Cold War, the USSR had an incentivised programme on developing destructive nuclear weapons. Such a programme resulted in several physics proffessionals around the country making an attempt towards developing destructive nuclear weapons. This was a countrywide phenomena that did not even take into cognisance the effects of such an incentivised programme. Russia is still haunted by such communist ignorance and its children will continue to suffer evil perpetrated by its fathers. Thousands of nuclear weapons are floating about the former Soviet Union and perhaps hundreds are unaccounted for. Radiation released into the environment has led to the contamination of soil, air, rivers and oceans; causing cancer and other diseases in people.
The use of nuclear power has never been "peaceful". "Inherently safe" reactors are a myth. An accident can occur in any nuclear reactor, causing the release of large quantities of deadly fission products into the environment.Even during normal operation, radioactive materials are regularly discharged into the air and water. One of the biggest problems facing the nuclear industry is what to do with the radioactive waste generated in a nuclear reactor. Large quantities of low and intermediate level wastes in liquid or solid form require a disposal route, and the highly radioactive spent fuel rods have to be isolated from the biosphere for hundreds of thousands, sometimes millions of years.When a nuclear reactor is shut down, many of its component parts have become radioactive. They have to be treated as nuclear waste.The process of dealing with the power station at this point is called "decommissioning". Over 400 reactors and many other nuclear installations worldwide have to be decommissioned over the next few decades, and there is not much technical expertise in this field. Vast sums of money will have to be spent on nuclear waste disposal, decommissioning, nuclear transports and the clean-up after radioactive accidents.
The planet is left with the legacy of nuclear waste, which will be radioactive for tens or hundreds of thousands of years. As yet, no safe solution for its disposal exists anywhere in the world.
The United States had an opportunity to purchase or otherwise control these weapons after the fall of the Soviet Union but typical U.S. government incompetence prevented help towards thwarting a looming nuclear threat. It is still not too late to work with Russia and other nuclear powers to make the world a safer place, although I feel certain that numbers of nuclear devices have slipped through the cracks and have already fallen into the hands of irresponsible individuals.
As such, there has been a massive debate over nuclear power world wide.
After all is said and done, is there any single nation worldwide that has the sole right to initiate nuclear programmes? Does the United States, Britain and other superpowers have the erxclusive right to mobilise such potentially destructive progerammes, claiming that they implement enough control measures? Is it a matter of developed nations preventing other countries from launching nuclear programmes, claiming such programmes would be capitalised by terrorist organisations?
A couple of years ago, the United States descended upon Saddam Hussein with an alarming alacrity that one cannot discern, claiming he was a potential threat to world peace since he was believed to be initiating and mobilising nuclear weapon programmes. Whether these allegations are true, somebody somewhere knows but I have this sentiment that most forms of aggression are based on unscrupululous lies and greed. As a matter of mentioning, how many repressive regimes worldwide are disserminating lies to citizens in the quest of remaining in power, at the disadvantage of the innocent citizen. It is just a matter of power and lies. Any nation has its own justifications for any action it takes.
However, by virtually destroying Iraq because of a dislike of a single individual, the USA has unleashed a hatred against itself that did not exist until this sadistic assault.The US went up to attack Iraq even although there was some kind of a reluctance on the part of the United Nations, leading interested parties wordwide to question the credibility and impartiality of the world body in solving international crisis if its decisions are often overuled by the United States of America.
Nuclear power activity in Iran and North Korea has also caused quite a stir and is still under the spotlight of the United Nations and the United States. However, Iran strongly points out that its a power generation endeavour. The extent to which this is true, also, somebody somewhere knows.
But the fact still remains, that nuclear installations, whether military or civil, have a sad record of accidents and incidents, shrouded in cover-ups, lies and misinformation.The generation of electricity in nuclear reactors produces substances than can be used for the fabrication of nuclear weapons.The dangers associated with the handling of weapons-useable nuclear substances require a high level of security and secrecy even in democratic countries.Moreover, nuclear energy has never been economic, despite the massive state subsidies it has received for decades. Even now funding still pours into the nuclear sector at the expense of renewable resources like solar or wind energy.
Having said that, I therefore sorely believe no nation has the sole right to initiate nuclear programmes because events worldwide are quite unpredictable. The United States or any other developed nation has no right to implement such nuclear programmes. Who could have imagined the destructive effects of the September 11 attacks when the United States had the world believe its homeland was secure against foreign terrorists? Nuclear weapons will still fall in the hands of the terrorists because potential terror knows no boundaries. Even in the United States, there are terrorists since there are groups that are starkly against the Bush Administration. Terrorist organisations are everywhere. What can stop nuclear weapons in the United States to fall in the hands of terrorist organisations in the United States. Homework for the Bush Administration.
Developing countries however must also take a reasonable position. The United States' attempts have met a mute or supportive response from most developing countries or other nations that are against the United States. Some countries even rejoiced when the USA undewent the September 11 bombings. What every nation needs to take into cognisance is everybody is vulnerable to terrorist attacks. Worse, developing nations. Bush is playing a major role towards eliminating terrorist activity but I do not support any nation, developed or developing, that makes an attempt towards playing with the nuclear fire.
The nuclear threat moves in parallel to the AIDS pandemic. Whatever led to the existence of the pandemic, the whole world will live to know of the cosequenses of unscrupulous adventures by certain individuals in the quest for initiating misery on vulnerable groups. Our planet Earth will always be haunted and everyperson would be affected in one way or another. Believe me. We are all people despite the level of development in various countries and everybody is liable to mistakes. It does not matter who you are, as long as you are a person.
